The difficulty of detecting cancers in women with dense breasts is of continued concern. In addition to the known masking effect of breast cancers by dense tissue, research indicates that 41% of women have greater than 50% breast density [7]. Furthermore, breast density is an independent risk factor for breast cancer. One study found a five times greater risk of breast cancer in women with dense breasts.
