I have been having regular Mammograms since 2001. I am 56 years old. I have no first relative with breast cancer. I eat a healthy diet, take regular exercise and have always been proactively involved in my Breast health care.
In 2015 I had a clear Mammogram and less than 6 months later I was diagnosed with a very large Invasive Breast Cancer. The Cancer did not show up on my Mammograms. I am now undergoing Chemotherapy, awaiting a mastectomy and full node clearance followed by radiotherapy.
Additional screening ‘Ultrasound’ would almost certainly have found my Cancer earlier and earlier diagnosis would have resulted in a less invasive treatment program.
I hope that together we can share and promote education about Breast Cancer.
Areyoudense.com is an American advocacy for women with Breast Density. It advises women to seek information and make informed decisions over their Breast Health Care Protocol.

It is important that people share this link with your friends. Awareness of the limitations of 2D mammography for women with moderate or high breast density could be a life saver. It is very important to share and promote awareness of the implications of breast density.

This is so true. Thank you for your interest. Awareness of Breast Density in Ireland is sadly lacking on many levels. This has to change.

Hi Siobhan, I have just read your story. Sending you best wishes and hoping that you are well following your treatment. My experience last year in France resulted in early detection (where u/sound is procedural on dense breasts). For this reason, I started to raise awareness in the UK (for all my family & friends) & since then Breast Density Matters UK has grown (many bc ambassadors) throughout the UK, breast surgeons, radiologists & support worldwide. The campaign raises breast cancer awareness; self examination and educates on breast density. It is gaining momentum – a full time mission that is definitely worth doing.

It is incredible how little is known about breast density. Women are being deprived of information which would enable them to make informed choices about their health and in some cases their lives. Important to keep sharing.
